Sherwood Police awarded accreditation

SHERWOOD, Ore. -- The City of Sherwood will receive its first Certificate of Accreditation from the Oregon Accreditation Alliance at its May 15 City Council meeting.

The Oregon Accreditation Alliance exists to improve the quality of law enforcement agencies in the State of Oregon and ultimately the quality of services provided to the citizens of this state.

There are many benefits to achieving Accreditation, including;

  • Providing independent confirmation that the agencies policies and procedures comply with professional standards.
  • Providing greater administrative and operational effectiveness.
  • Insuring continuous, systematic self-assessment of the agencies policies, procedures and operational practices.
  • Provides State and Local acknowledgment of professional competence.
  • Enhances public confidence in the law enforcement agency.

The original Accreditation award is for three years. At the conclusion of the three-year period, the department must undergo a re-accreditation assessment to prove they continue to operate within the body of standards.

'Stamp Out Hunger' today

PORTLAND, Ore. – If you’re feeling charitable, you can help "stamp out hunger" on Saturday.

“Stamp Out Hunger” is the annual food drive by the Oregon Food Bank and Oregon State Association of Letter Carriers. Postal carriers in Oregon and southwest Washington delivered 1.5 million yellow, biodegradable bags to homes this week.

If you would like to donate, simply fill the bag with non-perishable food – like canned soups, cereal and pasta – and leave it outside for your mail carrier. Items like peanut butter and tuna fish are in high demand for kids, since schools and food pantries need help with their summer lunch programs.

“Nobody raises more food in one day than letter carriers do across the country  by l,” said Kevin Card, the president of the Oregon State Association of Letter Carriers. “It's that one time we can work with our customers to do something really incredible.”

The drive can bring in two million pounds of food for Oregon and southwest Washington; however, donations were down by 18 percent last year. Organizers do not know the reason.

Don't waste time -- drop off your ballots early

Washington County elections officials are encouraging voters to send in or drop off their ballots as soon as possible this primary election season so that all ballots are processed in a timely manner.

Voters throughout Oregon should have received their ballots by mail over the recent weekend. Information about vote-by-mail, voter eligibility and other election matters may be found at the Washington County Elections Office website or by calling 503-846-5800.

Voters can mail their completed ballots in appropriately signed envelopes through the U.S. Postal Service until May 10. After that, completed ballots should be dropped off at official collection sites in order to meet the election's 8 p.m. deadline on May 15.

Ballot drop off sites can be found on the Washington County website.

Cat Adoption Team building damaged by break-in

SHERWOOD, Ore. -– The Cat Adoption Team was one of several businesses in Sherwood broken into sometime Saturday night or Sunday.

CAT officials discovered the break in mid-day Monday (no surgeries were scheduled today so the trailer was unused).

Thieves broke through a window of the Spay Station (surgical trailer on loan from Multnomah County Animal Services). They took a lap top and a small cylinder of isoflurane. Isoflurane is used as an inhaled anesthetic during surgery.

The Sherwood Police sent an officer to assess the damage and take down information.

CAT officials said they think the thieves may have been looking to obtain controlled substances used by CAT’s veterinarians. None of those drugs are stored in the trailer.

The total amount of loss to CAT is not known yet, but may be close to $2,000. The window frame was damaged during the break in. CAT is awaiting an estimate on the window repair to the trailer.
